Potatoes are known for their incredible versatility as we can make so many hearty dishes out of them, from the most complex oven recipe to simply tossing a potato in the microwave for a few minutes. Potatoes are always there to save the day and keep your tummy full and satisfied. But as amazing as all of these potato-powers may sound, there’s actually so much more to this wonderful and underestimated veggie.
Surprisingly, potatoes can also be used for body care and even household cleaning.
Check out these 10 unexpected ways you can use potatoes to make life a little bit easier.
1. Remove rust effortlessly
We all need to deal with metal rusts every now and then, and it can be really annoying. Even more so when you find it on your frying pan or tap. Luckily for you, all you need is one potato to get rid of this problem.
Start by cutting the potato in half and dip the exposed part of one half in dish detergent, table salt, or baking soda. Then, just rub the rusty parts until the item becomes as clean as you want it to be. (Use a new potato slice once the one in hand loses its cleaning powers for the best results.) Finally, rinse and let dry.
2. Treat minor burns
The following method works best for sunburns, but we’ll walk you through how to make it suitable for treating different minor burns.
Grab two potatoes, wash and cut them into slices, then, apply the slices to the affected areas on your skin. It’s best to use a compress or something to keep the potato slices from falling off. Leave them on for about fifteen minutes before washing with cold water.
If the burns are caused by boiling water, however, the slices won’t work and you’ll need to grate the potato or even blend it to extract its juicy paste. Carefully apply the potato paste to the affected area and leave it on until you no longer feel the pain. Note that, depending on the burn, it may take anywhere between fifteen minutes and multiple hours for the skin to finally cool down. So just be patient and replace the paste as soon as it becomes brown.
