In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and after months of uncertain messages The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a straightforward recommendation that all Americans should wear face masks when they are out in public to slow the huge spread of the pandemic. The agency confirmed that people with no or few symptoms of COVID-19 could transmit the virus, that’s why the mask can help to block the spread of the virus by protecting the wearer and preventing them from spitting their germs everywhere.

However, masks will never give you invincible powers since it will never replace good hygiene. You should wash your hands, avoid touching your face, and preserve social distancing. Those crucial keys helped Asian countries to contain the Coronavirus even when wearing masks was already a common habit. If social distancing measures are not strict enough, the Coronavirus cases will continue rising and potentially cause hundreds of thousands if not millions of deaths in the US. Even if people are gathering wearing masks.

  1. You should also remember those with facial hair, be it a goatee or beard this can lead to gaps around the mask that things can enter from being it prevents the mask from sealing to your skin.

    • It’s a carbon filter you insert in your cloth masks. It filters out very minute particles. You can get them on Amazon. Just search for pm 2.5 filters. They of course are back ordered.

  2. Face masks don’t stop the virus they only stop one from sneezing or coughing on someone. What about one’s eyes. One can get infected through their eyes or any open cuts or sores on ones body. Its just common sense to make sure you wash your hands whenever possible and the wearing of disposable gloves whenever there is a reason for wearing them. Keep away from crowds. Go for walks in the open air if able to but keep your distance from others until after the winter season.

    • Masks with an exhaust valve do not protect other people. They are made to protect the user in a hazardous environment and make breathing easier. The exhaled breath of a infected person will infect others. Something to keep in mind when you are visiting grandma.

  3. Well-the way I see it- nobody knows what to do.
If the virus wants to get you- he will get you – and if he gets you – chances are that nothing will happen to you- only small percentage die from it.
    So – why worry?

    • I would bet you probably have the same thoughts about concealed carry for self defense. Some people are not willing to take as much risk as you.

    • THATS NOT VERY CLEVER! PEOPLE LIKE YOU WITH THAT MENTALITY THAT SPREADS THE VIRUS! STAY HOME! LETS NOT GIVE AN OPEN INVITATION!
WHAT ABOUT THE POOR PEOPLE YOU MIGHT INFECT?? I FOR ONE WOULD LIKE ME AND MY FAMILY TO SURVIVE THIS! YOU IDIOT!

    • If you can’t say something helpful and/or kind please stay off the comment thread. Now everyone is being mean, rude or stupid. How does this help our world folks?

    • IT IS NOT WORRY THAT HAS TAKEN HOLD, IT IS MORE CONCERN FOR YOUSELF AND OTHERS…I WOULD SAY IT IS “NOT” A SMALL AMOUNT THAT DIE, IT COULD BE YOU OR ME THEN WHAT DO OUR LOVED ONES DO IF IT IS US? THEY CANNOT HAVE A D=FUNERAL DURING TIHIS PANDEMIC. YOU SEEM TO BE A YOUNG MAN AND ONLY THINKING OF YOURSELF DURING THIS VIRUS PANDEMIC…IT IS A “ME, ME.” WORLD TODAY, INSTEAD OF (LIKE YEARS AGO) WHEN PPL TOOK THEIR CHILDREN TO CHURCH WITH THEM, WE LEARNED TO LOVE THY NEIGHBOR…TODAY IT IS LOVE THYSELF…TOO MANY WEAK INDIVIDUALS WITH PROBLEMS TODAY, THEY CANNOT MAKE IT WITHOUT PPL TELLING THEM HOW WONDERFUL THEY ARE….THEY MOSTLY DON’T TAKE THEIR JOBS SERIOUSLY, BUT WILL BE THE FIRST TO COMPLAIN THEY DON’T MAKE ENOUGH MONEY, WELL WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO WARRANT THAT RAISE FROM THAT COMPANY? DO YOU JUST WANT MORE MONEY BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT? HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF YOUR POSITION IN THE COMPANY? HAVE YOU CONTRIBUTED GOODWILL OR BAD WILL? DO YOU WASTE TIME, PLAY ON YOUR COMPUTER INSTEAD OF WORKING…WHAT DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE WORLD OR DO YOU JUST TAKE…

  4. To Sam- Honestly, a lot of people really do know what to do, and it’s not that complicated. Just follow the protocols given by the CDC and your city or state. Wash you hands a lot. Stay away from crowds. Cover your coughs /sneezes, wear a mask. Why worry? Even if you don’t care about yourself, please understand that because it’s so highly contagious, you could get it and not know you have it and transfer it to someone else who may have a weakened immune system. Think of your friends and family who may have asthma, bronchitis, copd, or Grandma/Grandpa who just aren’t strong enough to fight it off. Just think about it. I wish you long life and good health.

    • DIANE THAT IS TELLING HIM “WHAT FER’ I JUST DUMPED ON HIM ALSO, MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE WORDS “WHY WORRY” I TOLD HIM IT IS MORE OF A CONCERN, ETC….I WOULD THINK A PERSON WOULD HAVE ENOUGH BRAIN POWER TO SEE THINGS AS THEY REALLY ARE…SEEMS HE MAY NEED A BRAIN AND HEART TRANSPLANT…. HOPE HE NEVER BECOMES OUR PRESIDENT….HAHA

  5. Men with beards and mustaches should shave them off…. hair by itself attracts and holds on to bacteria and viruses. Also women need to get their stringy hair up and pulled back neatly. Being hair, it holds on to dust, bacteria, etc. Artificial and long nails are perfect traps for all sorts of micro-organisms and dirt. If one is a nurse, doctor, or health worker: being “clean” and looking “clean” should be a requirement. It is appalling to see the
sloppiness of people at the bedside and taking care of patients. Post-op infections, the spread of
viruses can be carried and spread in these ways.

    • THEY SHOULD SHAVE THEM OF AS TOO MANY THINK THEY LOOK COOL? BUT, THEY LOOK UGLY WITH BEARDS AND HAIR ALL OVER THEIR FACES…JUST DO IT, I FIND THEM MORE HANDSOME WITHOUT BEARDS…LOTS OF WOMEN FEEL THE SAME, BUT MAYBE AFRAID TO LOSE THEM IF THEY TOLD THEM THE TRUTH….

    • ANDY: NOT SURE ABOUT THE LYSOL? IT SOUNDS A LITTLE RISKY TO ME? MAYBE THERE IS AN EXPERT OUT THERE THAT CAN TELL YOU….OR LOOK IT UP ON YOUR COMPUTER IF NO COMPUTER, ASK SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR YOU…R

  6. The reason for the recommendation to wear masks in public is to keep the wearer from spreading droplets containing virus because so many people can be infected with this virus and have no symptoms. A small amount of protection from airborne particles is gained but not enough to rely on. For the stated purpose those home made fabric masks are quite good. When they are removed refresh them with a hot iron and steam or thoroughly wet with bleach water and dry.
The people wearing those N95 construction masks with the plastic square on the front are not following the recommendation properly. That square is a one way valve that allows exhaled air to vent unfiltered. Its like wearing a sign that says I don’t give a sh** about you its all about me.

  7. If you want to use a homemade mask more than once, try spraying your mask with 91% alcohol, front and inside facing. Let it dry and you should be okay.

  8. You can make your own masks if you’re not fortunate enough to have them.
A sanitary napkin and a neck scarf can be put together to create a really strong and protective face covering. You tube can show you the steps.

    • STALICKS, GAWD, JUST THE IDEA OF A SANITARY NAPKIN ACROSS YOU NOSE MAKES ME WANT TO VOMIT, PLUS HOW THE HELL CAN YOU BREATH?

    • Check on youtube.com “George Carlin on Viruses” and see how ridiculous is to “Go through the “Precaution” of face masks”. After all, we are breathing the same air with or without face masks, wherever we go through.

  9. @ Dante Thanks for the rubbing alcohol tip. I believe the only ones in stores now are 70%.
@ Stalicks, I saw someone joking about Using a sanitary napkin. I didn’t think it would work, but I don’t see why not.
@ People who don’t want to wear a mask, think of others and not just yourself. Lots of people are asymptomatic and are spreading the virus to vulnerable people. Help others. You would want them to help you or your loved ones.

  10. 70% alcohol if fine. It has to be above 60% to kill all germs. The reason for 91% was that people were making their own gel hand sanitizers and it had to use 91% to end up with the over 60% concentration of alcohol required to kill the viruses.
Pleats up or down do not make a difference.
However, SOME surgical masks are one way out to protect patient, other way out to protect wearer. These are what we used to use at the hospital. Because we are now out of supplies, we are simply preventing droplets from our mouths possibly contaminating others, and are no longer as protected from being contaminated.

  11. Today was the first day out for me since this stuff started. I went to the grocery store and wore a mask. I have asthma, and a nose which gas been broken several times so that I mostly breathe through my mouth. I’m also close to 85 years old. I shopped for groceries, and put them in my car. I was really anxious to get that mask off, and did so as soon as the groceries and I were in the car. It sure was good to breathe again, and get back home to my, who is older..Now I suppose I can’t go out again for another 14 day quarantine. I hope the groceries last.

  12. has anyone been using grain alcohol to clean their mask as it is edible and non-toxic and is %96 181 proof? I heard that it is as effective at killing viruses as isopropyl

  13. I spray mine with Lysol and let dry a few hours or even overnight before wearing again. Lysol kills over 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. With the price of masks, I do this and rotate the ones I wear until they break or are worn out. I even repair the elastic string if it separates from the mask itself using glue like clear contact cement.

  14. I use a pump sprayer with both alcohol and hydrogen peroxide spray my mask after use and add a sheet of coffee filter to my mask for extra protection.

  15. I’m doing this as well and it works fine. I also use my CPAP sterilizer device to treat the masks with ozone which has a 99% kill rate for microorganisms. Then I steam iron them and they are good to go.

  16. People think! Do not follow the herd. We are all breathing the same air with or without face masks, which means you might as well carry a Halloween mask stuck to your face for that purpose. Just listen on youtube.com to one of the most intelligent man,”George Carlin on viruses” to think about this issue.

  17. After reading this, I guarantee that 9/10 of everyone I see is wearing their masks wrong and probably doing more harm to themselves than if they don’t wear one at all.
Why don’t we just social distance 6 ft without masks? Wouldn’t distance naturally take care of the problem, since particles disperse after a few feet anyways?
